SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE FINISHED!

Thanks for joining us! Keep an eye out for fall programs.

b21 Membership Required. We welcome all students 6th – 12th grade (no matter where you go to school) with a teachable attitude and desire to grow.

The end of the school year is quickly approaching and we are excited to offer opportunities for your student to hangout with some of their friends in a fun and safe environment while engaging in activities we know they will love. We believe these programs will encourage your student to learn something new and have fun in the process.

Step 3: Complete MEMBERSHIP for Each Student Individually for only $25

**Cedar Point is $100 and you MUST be registered by June 4th. NO EXCEPTIONS. SCHOLARSHIPS DO NOT APPLY TO THIS DATE.

When you register in your parent portal, please select “Summer Programs 2023” for $0, then add on each day you’d like to include for your student.

 

June 19th 

Alexander Martin Mobile Photography Workshop: Learn tips and tricks to make your mobile photos look like a pro with this In Camera > Photoshop workshop. Alexander Martin is a 27 year veteran photographer that loves exploring the use of light and leads beginning photography to advanced lighting workshops for weddings and sport portraits. He is constantly searching for educational opportunities for himself, his team, and for others.

Art Frame Collective: Students will work with a local woman in construction, Megan Dowell, to dream and build a series of art frames using creativity of mind and hands. Megan owns Knowing Your Home, which is an award-winning series of classes teaching women, kids, and homeowners how to tackle their own home projects. The frames these kids build will be used to display student art pieces within the B21 facility.

June 20th

Ecology Workshop: Create a biodiverse ecosystem in your backyard! Students will learn how to identify native and invasive plants in their area, and why knowing the difference is important. Then they will help install a pollinator garden with plants that are native to mid-Michigan at our center that will attract native insects and butterflies, and will be used to educate others about ecology.”

REACH Art Truck: Join us as we learn from REACH Art Studio on the art of wet-felting: the process of rubbing wool fibers together with soap and water to form a firm felted object. We will also be learning about printmaking which is carving a design on special printing blocks, creating a stamp to then transfer with ink onto paper.

June 22nd

Deep Fry Day (Cooking with Chris): Learn the art of deep-frying with our chef, Chris! Chris works for MSU and is coming to teach us how to create some delicious deep-fried favorites.

Impression 5 (Force + Motion, Take Home Circuit): Force and Motion is a challenge where learners try to slow down a marble  going down a ramp with given materials using an engineering design process. Then, we’ll alter the path of an electron, explore power sources, and investigate the difference between series and parallel circuit with Snap Circuits! Learners will use the four components of any circuit to test and experiment in this exploratory workshop!” It involves making different circuits, but it will not involve taking home circuits.” It involves making different circuits, but it will not involve taking home circuits.

June 26th

Cedar Point: $100 Need we say more? We will meet at B21 at 6:30am and be back around 11:30pm. Cost is $100 which includes transportation, wristband for all you can eat and drink while in the park, and your ticket to spend the day riding some of the countries best rollercoasters! MUST REGISTER BY JUNE 4TH. NO EXCEPTIONS! 

June 27th

Kayaking with Power of Water: Kayaking has never been more fun! Learn from the professionals from Power of Water on how to properly use your watercraft and participate in some fun activities during the process! Students must go through this program to use our programs on our lake.

Fishing: Come learn the art of fishing on our beautiful, quiet lake! We will provide the poles, the bait, and everything you need. Never been fishing before? No problem! We will teach you everything you need to know. 

June 29th

Sweet Encounter: Join us as we make Tokyo Street Food at Sweet Encounter! Known for their bakery and delicious food, we will get to explore their kitchen and learn how to prepare delicious dishes such as YakiTori and Japanese style crepes!

Ax Throwing: To end our day, we will spend time outside learning how to throw axes at our giant target! We will also have a ton of yard games for students to hangout, unwind, and enjoy the warm summer day.

July 10th

Expressive Storytelling with CADL: The workshop will be about how to tell a story about something that happened to you in a way that packs the biggest punch, whether you want to make someone laugh or just understand your point of view. We will first talk about what makes a good story and a good storyteller, then we’ll put what we want to express onto paper, and at the end we’ll have time for a few people to share what they created and practice their storytelling skills.

Paint n’ Take: Join Thunderforge Studios for some fun Miniature painting. You’ll paint miniatures provided by Wizkids for the super popular game “Dungeons and Dragons”.  Paint Provided by The Army Painter. So join us and see how much fun other parts of the tabletop gaming hobby exists.

July 11th

Metalworking + Jewelry Making: Vic Reynaud metalsmith has over fifty years experience and teaches at LMN. He is a US Navy veteran and just returned from  four years in SEA. He will be teaching us how to make and design a ring, 3 pendants, and a bracelet from a sheet of copper.

Cake Decorating with Amanda: Cake Decorating with Amanda! You will learn the art of frosting and decorating your own personal cake. We will explore the uses of buttercream frosting as well as working on fondant decorations. Every student will leave the program with a completely self decorated themed cake. Get ready to lick the bowl!

July 13th

Create and Design Your Own Journal: Learn how to make your own journal from scratch with well-loved local artist, Jane Reiter! She will walk you through using recycled book covers and papers to create the journal. Then, you will hole-punch and design the rest!

Emergency Response Training: Partnering with Lansing Area Safety Council, students will learn basic skills for what to do in a crisis in this 2-hour Basic First Aid & CPR/AED program. They will be equipped to help others in case of an emergency or crisis.

Do I have to be a member to participate in summer programs?

-Yes! Simply follow the steps at the link below: buildingtwentyone.org/membership

 

Is there transportation to Building 21 for summer programs?

-No. Students must find transportation to and from our facility for summer programs. However, transportation is provided to select schools during the school year.

 

What if I can’t get to B21 to pick up my student by 5:00pm?

-All students must be picked up by 5:00pm. If you cannot pick them up, you can arrange for transportation home with Redi-Ride at cata.org.

 

Do I need to register each student individually?

-Yes. You may do so on the parent portal.

 

Is food provided?

-Nutritious snacks will be provided. Our snack shop will also be open to purchase additional snacks and drinks.

 

What should my student bring?

-Your student should bring comfortable shoes, respectful attire towards themselves and others for possible indoor and outdoor activities, a water bottle, etc.

 


Membership Scholarship Information

Building Twentyone seeks to provide programs at little to no cost to participating students. The reality is, there is a price associated with providing trained staff, supplies, and a facility to accommodate the increasing number of teens enjoying our programs. Scholarships are available to students that apply and qualify.
